Since 1985, the honors in Thailand
have been presented on February 24, "National Artist Day". The date
was chosen because it is the birth date of Buddha Loetla Nabhalai, or King Rama
II, who was an artist himself.
The National Artist is a
title given annually recognizing notable Thai artists in literature, fine arts,
visual arts, applied arts (architecture, design) and performing arts (Thai
dance, international dance, puppetry, shadow play, Thai music, international
music, drama and film).
National Artists receive a monthly
salary of 20,000 baht as well as health benefits, 15,000 baht towards funeral
expenses and 120,000 baht for a memorial biography.
Almost 200 people have been honored as
national artists since the project was launched.
